Kansas City is famous for barbeque and jazz. Restaurants serving what they call the “Best BBQ in KC” are all over the city and make a fun way to spend dining out. Kansas City is the place for outstanding live jazz music, at the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District, the American Jazz Museum’s Blue Room, and the Gem Theater. Other area theaters include the American Heartland Theatre, the Coterie Theater, the Unicorn Theater, Folly Theater, and the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. The Kansas City Ballet performs at the Lyric Theater and the Midland Theater. The Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Kansas City Symphony also perform at the Lyric Theater. Musical performances are presented at the University of Missouri’s Conservatory of Music, the University of Kansas and William Jewel College. Live music is heard at various parks around Kansas City, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department.
In addition to Country Club Plaza and Westport Square, other outstanding shopping areas in Kansas City include Crown Center, home to Hallmark Cards. Crown Center Shops has more than 60 shops and unique boutiques, Hall’s, a major department store, and restaurants, including The American Restaurant, which has been awarded four stars by Mobil. Crown Center also sponsors year round activities, including fashion shows, puppet theater, magic shows, collections and exhibits, ethnic festivals, concerts, a pumpkin patch and Crayola Christmas Land. Crown Center Cinemas offer the latest films from Hollywood and Crown Center Ice Terrace provides a place to practice your double axel. Zona Rosa is a premier shopping area in Northland Kansas, and the downtown River Market features Kansas City’s premier weekly farmer’s market in addition to more than 30 specialty shops.
The arts community is very active in Kansas City. A large number of talented artists work at Hallmark Cards, and there are sculptors, painters and crafts persons all over the city. Several world-class art museums are located in Kansas City, including the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which is in the Plaza area. The Crossroads Art District hosts First Fridays, a weekly evening event highlighting the work of artists featured in 40 galleries at the trendy art district.
Museums around Kansas City include the American Royal Museum and Visitors Center, the Arabia Steamboat Museum, the John Wornall House Museum, the Kansas City Museum, the Liberty Museum, the Museums at 18th and Vine, which include the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City. Other interesting places to visit include the World War II Memorial, the John Wornall House, Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site, the Hallmark Visitors Center, Linda Hall Library devoted exclusively to the fields of science and technology, and Union Station where Science City is located along with City Extreme Screen, City State and the City Dome planetarium.
There are plenty of sports teams in and around Kansas City, including the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City T-Bones – minor league baseball, the Kansas City Wizards, and various college sports teams.
Mill Creek features a jogging track, plenty of wide open spaces, and the J.C. Nichols Fountain. Loose Park has an outstanding rose garden, Civil War markers, a lake, tennis courts, a wading pool and picnic areas. Theis Park is adjacent to Country Club Plaza. It has expanses of grass, a jogging path and an amphitheatre. Swope Park, the third largest park in the country, is just south of midtown Kansas City. The 1805-acre park is home to ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, trails, a pool, community gardens, a riding academy, the Kansas City Zoo, and the Blue River Golf Academy. The Lakeside Nature Center is located at Swope Park, as is the Starlight Theatre.
